Artistic nude photography emerged in the mid-19th century when photography was just starting to develop and be used in art. Some photographers, such as Jacques-Henri Lartigue and Jean-Louis Marie Eugène Durieu, began experimenting with nude bodies in their works.
However, the most famous and influential nude photographer was Alfred Stieglitz, who in the early 20th century founded the "291" gallery and the "Camera Work" magazine, where his photographs and works by other photographers, which became known as "pictorialism," were published. They tried to give their photographs a soft, aesthetically pleasing appearance, similar to painting. Many of these works depicted nude bodies, but they were stylized and were not considered pornographic.
In the 1930s, with the spread of men's magazines, nude photography began to be widely distributed in a more revealing form, which led to the emergence of the "glamour" genre. In the 1960s, the "free love" and "body culture" period began, and photographers started to explore more explicit themes such as sexuality and eroticism.
