J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967) was an American theoretical physicist known for his pivotal role in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. Born in New York City, he attended Harvard University and then pursued advanced studies in Europe. Oppenheimer made significant contributions to quantum mechanics and theoretical physics.
In the early 1940s, he became the scientific director of the Manhattan Project, leading a team of scientists to develop the first atomic weapons. The successful testing of the atomic bomb in 1945 marked a turning point in history. Following the war, Oppenheimer became an advocate for international control of nuclear weapons.
